Description
• On January 29, 2020, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) issued notification via their google groups listserve that they would be partnering with Nextdoor, an online community for neighborhoods, to allow residents to report non-emergency public safety concerns using the “forward to police” option. • The MPD notification states that they will not be monitoring posts on Nextdoor 24/7 and can only respond to posts “when practical”. • The ANC is thankful that MPD wishes to use all mediums available to communicate with the community; however, there is concern that the use of this feature can lead to consequences unforeseen by MPD. • Specifically allowing residents to report non-emergency concerns in this forum has the potential for misuse by residents to manipulate MPD into harassing their neighbors or marginalized populations within the community. • The use of this feature fails to acknowledge the precepts of the Neighborhood Engagement Achieves Results (NEAR) Act and alternatives to calling the police.
